QWAK,If it is the same size box THAT is a great price but I expect shiping would be conciderable for each if you don't happen to live close so you can walk in and pick them up.

QWAK,hypervel, seeing as the food will be inside a milar bag, bucket or box snould make no diference except perhaps the strenth of the container and perhaps maximising space and stackability.

I have 12 of another size loaded with sugar, rice and other stuff already, works for me.

Hey Duck,

Thanks for the tip. I loaded up.

I went river rafting at Glen Canyon last week and all the raft guides use those ammo boxes!

I wouldnt get within a mile of one of those things or ANY military surplus shit these days, they are contaminated with DEPLETED URANIUM and other toxic chemicals and dusts from the ammunition and other things. I am not sure it is the best thing to be using to store food. They are cool and certainly useful for that, but the risks outweight the advantages in my opinion.

jamesfrancisco 08-16-2008 12:52 PM

Re: QWAK,WAY better than BUCKETS! :)

Anything that has contained depleted uranium is very carefully controlled (although it actually poses no risk), and the boxes are disposed of as nuclear waste. Any ammo boxes you can buy are completely safe.

QWAK,jamesfrancisco,I got a RADIATION DETECTOR years ago from the same place. I supose I coud pop a battery in and check them but don't see it as any real problem.

I always wash and rince out ammo boxes any way and often repaint some I use for special purposes.

One thing I have found living in the boonies is that good PACKAGING is extreamly important so the stuff you GOT will remain usefull as long as posable. Counting on using somthing you know you got but is SPOILED or roted or useless when you need it -- REALY SUCKS! :s10:

The GOV spends big bucks on boxes but once the contence are gone or used up they are cheep surplus that would cost way more usualy for lessor quality containers from civilan sources.

I agree about quality.

Re: QWAK,WAY better than BUCKETS! :)

QWAK,I bought 6 of thease boxes (the smaller one) after I bought my Tahoe 3 fit very nicely on TOP and can hold a lot of stuff as they hold about as much as a foot locker and they are air and water tight. I painted 3 of them SILVER the color of the Tahoe.

If you need to BUG OUT they would make great "Grab and Go boxes" or just for going camping or on vacation. Not too hard to get up on top for one person depending on what you load in the box.

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=336762

I have ordered a couple of thease double boxes for things like cloths and blankets etc. GOOD storage container that bugs and vermin can't get in to AND air tight so also avoids rot and mold from dampness!:thinkey::yes:

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=459572

I lost a lot of stuff I spent a lot of time effort and $$ acumulating and hauling down to the DUCK NEST only to have to burn the stuff because it went BAD one way or another.:favorites21::censored::s10:

CHEEP INSURANCE --- you don't even have to fill out a CLAME form because YOU did not lose YOUR STUFF!:hahaha::haha:

QWAK,nub,LOL:hahaha::haha: You notice THAT too:wink: Sharp EYE and MIND too I suspect!:s9:

From the size and that they said they were made of steel I would expect perhaps 20 lb would be closer to shiping weight -- inles they are made of some REALY COOL space age ANTIGRAV material!

My order of 6 has been shiped and no request for added shiping costs. Perhaps they will call monday morning? It has hapened to me before with this company.

I may order 6 more for storing my VHS tape colection, never watch them but always planed that after TSHTF they could be intertainment.:questionm:dontknow: It seemed like a good idea at the time I was colecting them and perhaps they could be a DEEP STORAGE time capsule --- I will put the tape player in there TOO!:hahaha::haha:

I hate waisting all the $$ and EFFORT taping movies!:s10::shot:

It wasn't a thing, i just wrote too quick-real bad typist....
What i didn't get into was the cost of the boxes being that much...I felt that a 3:1 bucket to box cost ratio hurt my inner child. A full 5 gal of wheat IIRC comes in around 40lbs. I've got stacked groups of five. The other members of my family can handle that much. BIG boxes stacked full would be too much for them to haul around if the need arose. I was just thinking "out loud" and ineloquently at that.:rolleyes_m:
I also learned the hard way that small bunches of ammo worked out better for me than one big ammo box, chock full. :D

QWAK,got 10 boxes today all clean inside and out side in good shape too.:s9: I'm a happy camper! The latches work well and gaskets in good condition too. stack like big blocks!:hahaha::yes: heavy gage construction a great storage box!:s9:

I checked and they are now out of stock but will be geting more in soon.

QWAK,OK got my boxes and love them!:s9:

NOW how to fill them and with WHAT?

Some one posted this for o2 absorbers

http://www.sorbentsystems.com/order_O2.html

They sell mylar bags too is this a good place for them too? I see the bigist bags they sell are 1 gallon and it would take a lot of them to fill just one of them boxes, plus how many and what size o2 absorber for each 1 gal bag?

How much RICE,and beans to buy and perhaps wheat for flower and a mill to make flour next? :dontknow:

Perhaps one big milar bag for wheat and other bulk stuff??:questionm:questionm:questionm

I have one of them SEAL a MEAL things that makes vaccuume bags off a roll. Kind of thinking bag stuff in them with O2absorber then put THEM inside a BIG milar bag inside the can with more O2 absorbers and Vaccuume seal the big milar bag. put the lid on the can and should be good food for 10 years or more.???:dontknow::questionm :questionm

Duck, how much do you need? Dried stuff will keep in those cans for years, if they are airtight. You could just rotate the stuff every 5 years, eat it and restock when needed.

QWAK,jamesfrancisco,The boxes are incredably strong and do have rubber gaskets but gaskets can go bad or leak over time so I think a big milar bag and smaller bags inside that would give about the best long term storage. Not shure I would ever eat it but some one will IF it is stored properly.

I have 10 and going to order more perhaps 6?

Loaded with dry FOOD they become BUILDING BLOCKS and can be used to build shelving units,a coffee table or even stairs, if you think about it a little lots of posabilities, great intertainment center or a computer desk.:thinkey::yes: Paint them to blend in and you don't even see them-- sort of. LOL:wink:

IF the worst does happen I will eat the stuff and likely share with others to keep them from starving too.

IF the worst DON'T happen then I will feed who ever wants it including the animals IF they want to eat the stuff.

Mean wile either way I got some UNCONVENTIONAL furniture and PORTABLE storage containers that full or empty are incredably STRONG!

I have now dbout that I could line up two rows of theas boxes and with ramps and I coud drive my TAHOE over them with no problem -- they are that TOUGH!!

Do that with plastic buckets even full and they would instently POP.

I plan to put sugar in a fiew of them,I think 4 10lb. bags should just about fit,the humming birds ain gona STARVE!:D

What to put in the others?? :s9:

Perhaps ALL them BOXES filled with FOOD will be MY last "NOTHING DAY" gift to others in the FUTURE who will EAT my GIFT?:questionm:questionm:dontknow: You never KNOW.:yes:

Now I'm gona go build a stone wall with a real nice spring that comes out at the bottom each time it rains, and helps keep the river and water fall full in the bath/greenhouse.:s9:

Re: QWAK,WAY better than BUCKETS! :)

I'd say forget the sugar, you don't need it. Nor do hummingbirds, they live fine in the wild.
Leave the boxes open in the sun for a few days to absorb the light. Then when you make your stairs from it, you can sing "I'm walking on sunshine, wooo ooo" every time...

GOLD DUCK 08-23-2008 09:35 PM

Re: QWAK,WAY better than BUCKETS! :)

QWAK,jamesfrancisco,I am hipoglicemic and need the sugar, and I like having 30 or 40 hummers buzzing around, with out the feeder they would not come.

Being a DUCK I do well in both the SUN and RAIN.:s9:

The shugar keeps me rolling but on the edge too, been over that edge and it was sort of fun geting dead. LOL
